Dear HMS Parents, Guardians, and Students,
This week at Hastings Middle School, our teachers worked collaboratively to support every learner as we launch into Quarter 2. Grade-level teams reflected on student progress and identified next steps to help each child continue growing. Their dedication behind the scenes makes a lasting difference in our classrooms.
We also celebrated several student achievements across the arts and activities. Our 7th and 8th Grade band students delivered a fantastic fall concert Tuesday night, showcasing their talent and preparation. Last weekend’s performances of Annie Jr. were equally impressive, with our theater students shining on stage thanks to their hard work and support from staff and volunteers.
In athletics, 8th graders Jenna Arneson and Emilia Krause competed with the high school swim team at sectionals, with Jenna advancing to the finals. We’re incredibly proud of their effort and sportsmanship, and of all our students finding success in clubs, sports, and beyond. |
|
To cap off the week, students came together for a spirited Penny Wars fundraiser, raising hundreds of dollars for Hastings Animal Ark. Their generosity and Raider pride were on full display, and we’re grateful to our families for your continued support. Go Raiders! Ryan Wynn Principal Hastings Middle School |

Welcome Our New Native American Liaison: Cyan Peacock-Hale |
|
|
Boozhoo! (Hello!) We are excited to introduce Cyan Peacock-Hale, the new Native American Liaison for Hastings Public Schools!
Cyan’s role is centered on bringing more Indigenous culture, voices, and traditions into our schools. Students and families can look forward to seeing these connections come to life through art, music, storytelling, and community events that celebrate the beauty and vibrancy of Native cultures. A fun fact from Cyan: They weren’t named after the color—Cyan is actually named after a character from the Spawn comic book series!
Cyan shared, “I’m really excited to get to know all of you and help make our schools a place where everyone feels seen, supported, and proud of who they are.” Miigwech! (Thank you!) |

Lots of fun with the HMS Penny War and 7th/8th grade dance tonight!
Thank you for your supporting our students’ HMS penny war, which ended this afternoon. Students will learn which grade won and receive trivia during lunch the week of November 25th. Reminder to 7th and 8th grade families: the 7th/8th grade dance is tonight 6:30-8 p.m. in the HMS Cafeteria. The cost is $6.00 or $5.00 with a food shelf donation. School rules apply and students need to be at school today in order to attend (appointments and funerals are okay).

- If you have visited any ISD 200 building this year, and received a visitor ID by scanning your id, you are in our system and will have a visitor ID printed/waiting for you the night of the dance.

If you have not visited a building yet this year, please come to Hastings Middle School and check in at the Welcome Center at least two days before the dance to scan your ID into our security system so that we can print you a visitor ID for the night of the dance.

🩺 Health Office Updates We want to keep our HMS community safe and healthy! Here’s an important reminder from the health office this week: |
|
|
-
🦠 Illness of the Week: Strep Throat – We’ve seen an increase in strep throat cases this week. Please keep an eye out for symptoms such as a sore throat, fever, headache, or stomachache. Students who are diagnosed with strep should stay home until they’ve been on antibiotics for at least 24 hours and are feeling better. Encourage your child to avoid sharing drinks or utensils and to wash their hands frequently to help prevent the spread.
- 🤒 Not Feeling Well? Visit the Nurse First! – If your student begins to feel sick during the school day, they must visit the health office before contacting home.
- Students should not text or message parents directly to be picked up.
-
The nurse will assess symptoms and, if needed, provide a pass for dismissal through the proper channels.
- This process helps us track illnesses, ensure student safety, and maintain clear communication between school and families.
-
💊 Medication Procedure Reminder – All medications at Hastings Middle School should first go through the health office. In some cases, students may carry and administer their own medication, but per district policy, the proper paperwork must be on file to do so.
-
🩺 Health Conditions in Infinite Campus – It’s best practice to have your student’s health condition documented in Infinite Campus so staff can respond appropriately in an emergency.
-
If we are unaware of an existing condition and cannot reach a parent during a time-critical situation, it may cause dangerous delays in receiving proper care.
- These procedures are in place to ensure student safety remains our top priority at HMS.
-
|
|
|
If your student has a medical condition that should be documented in our system, or medication that needs to be administered at school, please reach out to Nurse Erin or Nurse Katie in the health office.
Wishing everyone a safe and healthy week, Nurse Erin and Nurse Katie 🌸 |

These can be retrieved during school hours or after school until 3:30 pm. Please remind your child to regularly check the lost and found for any missing items throughout the school year.
