Principal Corner

Dear HMS Families,

This week at Hastings Middle School was filled with productive learning and collaboration. We kicked off a new reading challenge in the media center, inviting all students to explore the Maud Hart Lovelace Award nominees, and many of our young readers have already started diving into those books!

We also took time to celebrate the people who support our students every day. In honor of National School Counseling Week, our school showed appreciation for our amazing counseling team.

To cap off the week, students came together this afternoon for a spirited all-school assembly. Our Jazz Band set an energetic tone with music as each grade cheered on classmates during fun winter-themed competitions, including a fast-paced โ€œbobsledโ€ relay and a race to pull on cold-weather gear. Student leaders and staff helped everything run smoothly, and the gym was filled with Raider pride, laughter, and teamwork. We ended the assembly on a high note with the band playing our school fight song, sending everyone into the weekend smiling. Even outside the school day, our winter sports teams and clubs have been working hard and demonstrating great teamwork and perseverance.

To be eligible to vote, students must read or listen to at least three nominated books. Titles are available through the library media center and the public library, making it easy for students to participate. ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ Raider Way Updates

Today we had a schoolwide assembly for all of our HMS students with the theme of Winter Olympics โ€œFaster, Higher, Stronger- Together.โ€ Our students practiced being safe, respectful, and responsible in this fun celebration and we all had a really fun time!

On next Wednesday, February 11th in advisory the Raider Way lesson will guide students through an activity to reflect on one of our core school values - Respect. Students will share what respect looks like in students and adults at Hastings Middle School. You can support students by asking them to reflect with you on these questions:

  • What is respect at school?
  • What does respect look like in students at HMS?

๐Ÿฅ Keeping HMS Healthy

Sore throats and strep throat appear to be on the rise again this week. Please continue to monitor your student for symptoms such as sore throat, fever, headache, or stomachache, and keep them home if they are not feeling well.

Good hand hygiene, avoiding shared drinks or utensils, and getting plenty of rest can help reduce the spread. Thank you for helping us keep HMS healthy!
