Dear Hastings Middle School Families,
This week at Hastings Middle School was marked by steady learning, thoughtful conversations, and leadership opportunities for our students. As I walked through the building, I saw students settling into routines, supporting one another in class, and continuing to take pride in doing things the Raider Way. Our daily reminders about being safe, respectful, and responsible helped set a positive tone as we moved through the week.
One of the week’s highlights was our continued focus on student leadership. Sixth and seventh graders were invited to apply for the WEB Leader team. This is a key role that supports welcoming and mentoring our incoming fifth graders. The application form went live this week. I appreciated hearing from students who were curious and enthusiastic about leading with kindness, and we are proud of the many thoughtful responses already submitted. These early steps are helping build a strong foundation for next year.
Reading also remained a central focus in classrooms. This week’s featured book recommendation, Wonder by R.J. Palacio, sparked meaningful conversations about friendship, identity, and seeing beyond first impressions. It has been encouraging to watch students connect those themes with how they treat one another throughout the day in the halls, at lunch, and during group work. Those lessons in empathy and perspective are just as important as academics, and they were on full display.

Behind the scenes, our staff continued to collaborate in ways that strengthened instruction and built consistency across grade levels. Team meetings were focused and purposeful, ensuring we are aligned in how we support each child’s learning journey. That ongoing work matters. It’s what allows classrooms to stay energized, responsive, and inclusive.
As we head into the long weekend, I want to thank you for your ongoing encouragement. When we return, we’ll continue preparing for upcoming student events, MCAs, and the leadership opportunities that help make HMS a place where every student belongs and grows.
Go Raiders!
