Dear Families,
One of the great things about being an elementary principal is getting to read books to all our students. This week, I have begun sharing the book Touch the Sky with our students. The story follows Vern, a child determined to learn a new skill, who keeps trying even when things seem tough. With encouragement from a friend and his own perseverance, Vern experiences the moment he finally soars, reminding all of us that great things come from not giving up. This message connects directly to our school’s Pinecrest PRIDE values: Problem solving, being Respectful and Responsible, having Independence, Demonstrating self-control, and showing Empathy. As students heard Vern’s story, we talked together about how showing PRIDE means working hard, supporting each other, and always believing in ourselves.
Reading together is powerful, and I encourage every family to make nightly reading a priority. Just 15 to 20 minutes each day makes a huge difference, helping children build vocabulary, strengthen comprehension, and succeed academically. When grown-ups read with children, or listen to them read, it sends a clear message: learning matters.
Next week, Pinecrest is excited to welcome local author Zora Zee for a special visit. Zora Zee will share the joy of storytelling, answer questions, and inspire our students to dream big—just like Vern! Author visits build excitement, community, and show youngsters that reading and writing can take them anywhere.
Thank you for reinforcing the importance of reading and PRIDE at home. Together, we support every child in soaring to new heights, both as readers and as caring friends.
