Message from the Superintendent

Hello Raider Nation!

We’re excited to welcome all of our students back; what a fantastic start to the school year! It was inspiring to see our Link Crew in action on Tuesday, warmly welcoming our freshman students and helping them get acclimated to their new school. Likewise, our 7th and 8th grade WEB leaders did a fantastic job greeting our incoming 5th graders and supporting their transition to middle school. We’re proud of these student leaders for creating such a positive and supportive start to the year!

As we begin this new chapter, student safety remains our highest priority. To support this commitment, we’ve implemented new drop-off procedures at our elementary schools to enhance building security. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we all adjust to these changes. A special thank you to the City of Hastings and our law enforcement partners for their visible presence and support during this first week.

As mentioned in a recent Raider Update, many of our staff members have participated in reunification training using protocols recommended by the “I Love U Guys” Foundation. This is another step we’re taking to ensure we are well-prepared to keep our students and staff safe.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

Go Raiders!!

school board update

August 27, 2025 | Hastings Middle School

The Hastings School Board met for its regularly scheduled meeting and reviewed key updates:

  • Welcome Back: Open houses were held at all schools. Professional development focused on MTSS, assessment, Catalyst training, and the new Amplify Science curriculum.

  • School Start Dates: 5th and 9th graders started on Tuesday, 6th - 8th and 10th - 12th grade started Wednesday, K–4th grade students started Thursday, and preschool begins September 8.

  • Pathways Update: Career pathways have been refined into five clusters: Science & Technology, Engineering & Manufacturing, Health Science, Arts & Communications, and Business & Industry. Students will begin using the Zello platform for career interest inventories and course planning. The district is working toward adding certifications, internships, job shadowing, and mentorship opportunities in partnership with local businesses such as Allina Health and Delta. Pathway sequencing will be finalized by November, and this work will continue to evolve as we learn more about student interests and employer needs.

  • BrightWorks Training: Membership was renewed to support adherence to the READ Act through required professional development for teachers and paraprofessionals. BrightWorks also offers students opportunities, including the Knowledge Bowl and the Young Authors Conference.

  • SRO Contract: The School Resource Officer (SRO) contract was amended to clarify reassignment language. A second SRO will not be serving in that capacity from mid-September through possibly January.

  • Board Approvals: Superintendent goals for 2025–26, the 3-Year Governance Work Plan, updated policies, and most donations were approved.

Minnesota Free School Meals Program

Filling out the educational benefits application could qualify your family for reduced participation fees. Please fill it out HERE.

What is the Minnesota Free School Meals Program?

The Minnesota Free School Meals Program provides state reimbursement to schools participating in the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program so that students can have one breakfast and one lunch at no cost at school.

Can the meals be picked up or brought home like we did during the pandemic?

No. Congregate meal service is required in the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program. Meals may not be taken off campus, sent home, delivered, or picked up by parents or others.

Do I still need to complete the Application for Educational Benefits?

Families need to complete the Application for Educational Benefits. Applications for Educational Benefits determine how much funding your child’s school receives for educational programs and support. Additionally, eligible families can qualify for other benefits, such as:

  • WIC Benefits

  • Metro Transit Assistance Program

  • FCC Affordable Connectivity Program/Reduced-price internet programs

  • Some summer camps, athletics programs, and child care providers offer scholarships or discounts

What is included in the MN Free School Meals Program?

The student must choose at least three items to be counted as a reimbursable meal at breakfast. The student must choose a ½ cup serving of fruit or a vegetable as part of their breakfast. At lunch, the student must choose at least three components to be counted as a reimbursable meal. The student must choose a ½ cup serving of fruit or a vegetable as part of their lunch.

What is NOT included in the MN Free School Meals Program?

Single-item purchases and non-reimbursable meals are not free. Some examples include: a carton of milk, snack items, a second entrée, a second breakfast, or a second lunch, meals that do not meet the minimum requirements, and meals served to teachers, staff, and other adults.

The price for student breakfast and lunch meals will be $0 for all sites.

Fill out the Form! The Application for Education Benefits helps determine how much education funding your school will receive. Complete an application for your student for the school year 2025-26.

  • Students and families may qualify for other program fee reductions based on their eligibility for free or reduced-price meals. Parents should complete an Application for Education Benefits.

  • Only meals that meet the requirements are reimbursed. Students who want additional or single items will be charged for those items.

  • The 2025-26 Free and Reduced Meal Application is on the district website under Food Service, and a paper application has been mailed out to families.
